YLE (Young Learners English).
"WHAT ARE THE CAMBRIDGE YOUNG LEARNERS ENGLISH
TESTS?"
The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests are a
series of tests for children aged 7 to 12 who are
learning English as a Foreign Language. They are
designed to be accessible and interesting, and,
with no pass or fail grades, the tests provide
every student with a reward for his or her
efforts.
The tests are available at three levels -
Starters,
Movers and
Flyers.
Flyers is
approximately equivalent to the level of the
Cambridge Key English Test (KET)
so the tests can provide a first step towards the
main suite of internationally recognised
Cambridge examinations for teenagers and
adults.
WHO ARE THE TESTS FOR?
The tests are designed for children of all
nationalities, whatever their first language. The
material is intended to be relevant and interesting
to everyone.
WHICH SKILLS DO THE TESTS COVER?
All four of the main language skills -
listening, speaking, reading and writing - are
tested, in order to give a comprehensive picture of
the learner's overall level of English.
WHAT ARE THE TESTS LIKE?
A great deal of thought has gone into designing
tests for children in this age group. They are
produced to the same standards as the Cambridge
tests for adult students, but they draw on the
kinds of topics and activities which are familiar
to children.
Each test consists of three components:
.....
Reading and Writing .....
listening .....
Speaking
The Reading and Writing and Listening tests take
between 40 minutes and 60 minutes in total,
depending on the level of the test, and the
Speaking test takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
The question papers are produced in full colour,
with attractive illustrations throughout.
WHO MARKS THE TESTS?
Trained oral examiners visit examination centres
to assess the children's performance in the
Speaking test. All other tests are sent to
Cambridge and marked by UCLES examiners.
WHAT DO CANDIDATES RECEIVE?
Everyone who completes the test is given an
award, showing a grade between one and five
(represented by 'shields') for each of the
different skill areas assessed:
.....
Reading and Writing.....
Listening.....
Speaking.
